Julius Kiefer

Julius Kiefer (born October 15, 1820 in Saarbrücken ; † December 26, 1899 there ) was a merchant, Saarbrücken mayor and ornithologist .

Life

Kiefer was born in 1820 as the son of the pharmacist Georg Adolf Kiefer. He attended the Ludwigsgymnasium in his hometown and passed the Abitur in 1836. He then completed his apprenticeship in the Karcher dye shop until 1839. In 1840 he began his military service with the 9th Hussar Regiment in Saarbrücken. After his release, he worked as a businessman in Mannheim and Stuttgart before he found a job at Decker & Sons in Amsterdam in 1845 .

In 1846 Kiefer went to Constantinople , where he was accountant for the Mathieu & Frères trading company the following year . In 1852 he founded a trading company in Constantinople with the Antoniadi brothers. In 1860 he returned to Germany and for the next few years was an independent businessman in Offenbach am Main . In 1870 he returned to his hometown Saarbrücken. On December 29, 1871 he was elected mayor of Saarbrücken and held office until 1884. From 1886 to 1889 he was third alderman , and from 1889 to 1892 first alderman of the city.

Kiefer died in 1899 and was buried in the Alt-Saarbrücken cemetery.

Effect as an ornithologist

From 1877 onwards, Kiefer published numerous articles on the local bird world and is considered a "pioneer of Saarland ornithology".

Honors

In 1871 Kiefer was included in the Saarbrücken casino company . On December 19, 1890, Kiefer was made an honorary citizen of Saarbrücken. Today a street in the Saarbrücken district of St. Arnual is reminiscent of Kiefer.
