Karl Karcher
Karl Friedrich Ludwig Karcher (born August 20, 1818 in St. Johann ; † September 24, 1868 there ) was a German merchant and mayor of St. Johann .
Life
Karl Karcher came from a wealthy and wealthy Saarbrücken merchant family. His father was the master butcher Friedrich Ludwig Carl Karcher (1790–1872), his mother Catharina Margaretha (1795–1859) the daughter of the Saarbrücken master builder Johann Adam Knipper . Karcher worked as a merchant in his hometown. On June 15, 1848 Karcher married the daughter of the brewer Ludwig Geisbauer, Eleonore Catharina Christina (1827-1891). From the marriage came a daughter and four sons, Elenora Catharina Mathilda (* 1850), Ludwig Carl (1850-1902), Leo (1852-1853), Ernst (1856-1914) and Max Julius (1863-1893). Karcher died in 1868, just a month after retiring as mayor. The family graves are in the old cemetery Sankt Johann .
Public offices
On March 24, 1859, Karcher received his appointment as a member of the council of the Mayor of Saarbrücken . Since the incorporation of the Saarbrücker Land, which previously belonged to the Département de la Sarre, in the Second Peace of Paris into the Kingdom of Prussia on January 31, 1816, the neighboring communities of Saarbrücken , Sankt Johann, Burbach , Malstatt , Rußhütte and Brebach - Halberg have been jointly administered. In 1859 the municipal administration was reorganized again through the Rhenish town order and on May 3, 1859, Sankt Johann was separated as an independent town. This state of affairs was to continue for 50 years until the Saar cities were reunified to form the city of Saarbrücken in 1909. With the resignation of the incumbent mayor August Kromayer , Karcher was elected mayor of Sankt Johann one day later, on May 19, 1862. His election was confirmed on June 12, and on June 30, 1862, he was inducted into office. On December 22, 1862 he was elected as a deputy member of the district council. His term of office as mayor ended at his own request by resigning from office on August 20, 1868, his 50th birthday.
Foundation, endowment
Karcher left a sizable fortune. After the death of his wife in 1891, his heirs set up the Karcher Foundation in Sankt Johann to support the impoverished sick. The foundation was initially endowed with 25,000 marks .

Others
The diplomat Heinrich Thomas von Karcher (1773-1824) and the Kommerzienrat Eduard Karcher (1818-1895) came from the same family. Karcherstraße in Saarbrücken's Sankt Johann district is a reminder of their work.
The short biography of Hanns Klein as well as the Saarland biography based on it note that Karcher was the owner of the Forbacherhof near Neunkirchen (Saar) . This contradicts the information in the local chronicles of Kohlhof and Furpach, which lead the series of private owners of the farm beginning with Caspar Karcher (1806) through his son Philipp Heinrich Karcher , his grandson Eduard Karcher and his great-grandson Paul Karcher (1904).
