Ernst Wasserzieher

Ernst Wasserzieher (born May 15, 1860 in Stettin , † April 21, 1927 in Halberstadt ) was a German etymologist and lexicographer .

Life

Wasserzieher attended high school in Magdeburg and then studied philosophy with Ludwig von Strümpell in Leipzig and with Rudolf Eucken in Jena . Wasserzieher graduated as Dr. phil. After completing his studies, he visited the USA in 1882/83 , where he lived in Nauvoo over the winter and interned at various schools in the area. In September 1883, Wasserziehers began serving in the military and then worked as a teacher. Wasserzieher lived in Eisenberg from 1884 to 1888 .

He first appeared in journalism when he wrote various texts around 1900, in particular travel stories from the period from 1878 to 1900 a. a. published in the Münchener Allgemeine Zeitung, in the Hamburger Correspondenten, in Kölner, Flensburger and Wittener papers, as well as in the tourist newspaper. In 1902 a compilation of these texts appeared as a book under the title "From Haparanda to San Francisco" . In 1906 he published the anthology German Women's Letters. In 1918 his etymological lexicon of the German language Woher? , which was praised by contemporaries and made him known. In 1920 Hans and Grete followed , an etymological dictionary of names in which the origin of thousands of German first names is explained. Both works were published in numerous editions. In addition to lexical works, Wasserzieher has also published several popular scientific works on etymology, including a. Life and weaving of language , linguistic historical chats and bad German .

Wasserzieher was last chief lyceal director and died in 1927 of a heart condition. He had three sons: Karl, Ernst jr. and Hans.

His works continued to circulate after his death and World War II . The name explanations from Hans and Grete often still form the basis of many publications that have the etymological background of first names as their content.

Contemporaries of the water drawer were u. a. the linguists Friedrich Kluge and Georg Stucke , the latter was director of the secondary school in Rastatt and author of the small etymological dictionary from 1921.
