Ernst Weller

Christian Ernst Friedrich Weller (born April 30, 1789 in Gotha ; † March 28, 1854 in Jena ) was a German philologist, librarian and a royal Russian legation councilor .

Life

From 1811 Weller studied in Jena, where he received his doctorate in philosophy on May 3, 1816. In between he took part in the wars of liberation and was a member of the original fraternity . In 1817 he took part in the Wartburg Festival.

From April 1818 Weller was an assistant officer of the superintendent at the University of Jena , although he was employed in the university library in the same year, he also received a fixed salary from 1820 and was only employed as a library assistant from 1830. His service diaries have been preserved for the years 1820 to 1831 (ThULB: AB III, 1-12).

In 1826 he married Adelheid Henriette Amalia von Kropf (around 1803-1870), daughter of the Prussian captain Karl Friedrich von Kropf in Zeutsch. Between 1827 and 1838 the couple had three sons and two daughters.

In 1832 Weller was appointed to the Legation Council.

Goethe

As the responsible minister at the Weimar court , Goethe was confronted with the "faltering nature" of the Jena university library from 1817 onwards . For example, the correspondence with Weller in those years reflects Goethe's efforts. Among other things, the minister relied on Weller's sure judgment; was reported often.
