Ernst Zahnow

Ernst Zahnow (born January 28, 1890 in Stettin ; † October 26, 1982 in Winsen (Luhe) ) was a German homeland researcher and textbook author. He wrote local literature on Pomerania , especially Szczecin, and school books for French lessons.

Life and accomplishments

Ernst Zahnow was born in Stettin on January 28, 1890 . There he attended the Schiller Realgymnasium. He then studied geography, German and Romance studies at the University of Berlin , the University of Caen in France and the University of Greifswald .

He chose the profession of high school teacher and began in 1914 as a trainee teacher at the Marienstiftsgymnasium in his home town of Szczecin. During the First World War , he first served as a soldier on the Eastern Front, then as an interpreter in the prisoner of war camp in Schneidemühl . In 1919 he became a teacher at the Gesenius-Wegener-Oberlyzeum in Stettin, where in 1920 he was appointed senior teacher and in 1929 senior student. During the Second World War he was initially employed as an interpreter in western France, but then returned to school service in 1944, where he initially taught in Szczecin schools that were relocated to Rügen , and then again in Szczecin himself. In January 1945 he was drafted into the Volkssturm and took part in retreat battles through Pomerania until he came back to Rügen. After Stettin came to Poland after the Second World War, he moved from Rügen to West Germany in 1946. From 1947 until his retirement in 1952 he was a high school teacher at the Athenaeum Stade . He died on October 26, 1982 in Winsen (Luhe) .

In West Germany, Zahnow was involved in associations of expellees. He was a founding member of the Central German Cultural Council and a member of the federal board of the Pomeranian Landsmannschaft .

Zahnow wrote local history books and essays about Pomerania , especially about Szczecin. After the Second World War he was co-editor of a Pomeranian songbook. In the 1950s he designed a school wall map about Pomerania, which was published by Flemmings Verlag in Hamburg.

Ernst Zahnow is also the author of school books for French teaching.

Zahnow's local history was put into the library in the Pomerania Center in Lübeck-Travemünde .
