Ernst Zimmermann (art historian)

Ernst Albert Zimmermann (born November 3, 1866 in Hamburg , † January 6, 1940 in Dresden ) was a German art historian specializing in the history of porcelain .

life and work

Ernst Zimmermann studied art history in Leipzig , Munich and Berlin . In 1892 he received his doctorate from Heinrich Brockhaus in Leipzig. After a two-year traineeship at the Kunstgewerbemuseum in Cologne , he started inventorying art monuments in Hessen-Nassau in 1897 . From 1898 he was an assistant at the porcelain collection in Dresden. He headed this from 1908 as assistant director, from 1912 until his retirement in 1933 as director.

Zimmermann dealt with both Meißner and Chinese porcelain . In 1910, 1925 and 1927 he processed the holdings of Chinese porcelain in the collection of Topkapı Sarayı on behalf of the Turkish government .
