In the field of art history, he published numerous handbooks and historical treatises on the various painting techniques and ceramics, some of which were considered standard works, appeared in many new editions and were also translated into foreign languages. He also dealt with questions of art theory, for example the topic of color harmonies. He also published local travel guides under the pseudonym Friedrich Montanus .
