The Veltener Stichkanal (VSK) is a federal waterway in the German state of Brandenburg . From a geographical point of view, it forms the current lower reaches of the moat .

description

The canal branches off north of Hennigsdorf at kilometer 15.3 in a north-westerly direction from the federal waterway Havel-Oder-Wasserstraße (HOW), legally belongs to it and is designated as waterway class IV. It connects the port of Velten and an industrial area to the HOW. The branch channel crosses the course of the Muhre , which from now on flows here. The canal is 3.23 km long, the bottom width is 30 meters. It is designed for 600-ton ships . The canal made it possible to dispense with the land transport of the products from the furnace factories to the loading points at Hohenschöpping and at the Schwalbengrube. The Eberswalde Waterways and Shipping Office is responsible for the administration .

history

construction

The history of the canal is closely connected to the stove tile and brick production in Velten , which was at its peak around 1900. The decision in favor of the canal is to be seen in connection with the large shipping route from Berlin to Stettin (today: Havel-Oder-Wasserstraße), which was built at the same time and ensured that Velten products could be transported quickly and comfortably to Berlin. Between 1906 and 1912, 237 hectares of land were transferred to community ownership for the construction of the canal  . The canal was completed between 1910 and 1912 and the port was inaugurated in 1911. The costs amounted to 3.3 million  marks .

As a result of the construction of the harbor, the moor trench , which previously continued into the Muhrgraben , now flows into the Havel with the branch canal.

Extension to the north

At the cut north branch of the canal

Originally a five-kilometer-long four-aisle industrial port was planned east of Velten, which was to lead from the branch canal to the large shipping route at Pinnow . An industrial railway should run along the canal. In 1923 a contract was signed with a settlement company. This had acquired 6,365 acres of land for the site  . At the beginning of 1924, the construction of the canal began, which branches off at the bridge of the Hohenschöppinger Weg. Construction ended in April 1927 after just 1.7 km. The reason was the liquidity problems of the settlement company, which at the same time was still involved in the implementation of many other projects. a. on the Niederheide near Hohen Neuendorf . After the Second World War, the stump of the canal was divided by a dam about 250 m after the branch from the branch canal . In 2005 the cut piece was again divided by a road embankment.

Forerunner of the canal

As early as 1894 there was a canal between the Havel and the Kunststraße (road connection Velten – Hennigsdorf). It ran further south in an east-west direction and was much narrower. Its silted up remains were filled in during the expansion of the Hennigsdorf steelworks site .

Economical meaning

Shortly before the First World War, the Velten brickworks fell victim to the crisis on the Berlin hardware store. Soon after the war, the number of furnace factories also decreased considerably. Metal processing and chemical companies settled on the banks of the canal near Velten . Nevertheless, the use of the canal continued to decline, which was also due to the shift of freight traffic to rail and, after 1990, to road.

The actual transport of goods in 2005 was 77,291 t. In the next three years it fluctuated strongly with 63,427 t, 95,040 t and 47,644 t. In 2009 it was 122,490 t. Of this, 114,876 t (mainly building materials) were transported in the direction of the Velten harbor and 7,614 t (mainly agricultural and forestry products) in the direction of the Havel-Oder waterway. In 2010, the transport of goods remained relatively constant at 133,663 t (116,236 t in the direction of the port of Velten and 17,427 t in the direction of the Havel-Oder waterway).
