Velten harbor
The port of Velten is an inland port in the Brandenburg town of Velten . It is connected to the Havel-Oder waterway via the Velten branch canal . From there there is a connection to Berlin , Stettin and the Baltic Sea .
history
The history of the port is closely linked to stove tile and brick production , which was at its peak around 1900. A total of 43 furnace factories and ceramic workshops were located in the municipality in 1903. To improve the transport options, the plan was to create a port and a canal to the Havel-Oder waterway, only three kilometers away.
Under the then mayor Hermann Aurel Zieger, the construction of the Velten branch canal and the harbor basin began on March 7, 1910. The harbor was built in the floodplain of the moor trench , which previously continued southward into the Muhrgraben , but has since flowed into the Havel through the branch canal at Velten. The harbor basin was inaugurated on July 10, 1910, while the canal did not go into operation until 1911. The construction costs of the city harbor amounted to 1.5 million marks . A port with a total of 360 meters of loading line was built on a total of 14,800 square meters, at which 30 barges could moor at the same time. There was a connection to the Kremmener Bahn via a connecting track . In the first year, 2,420 stoves were shipped from here. Two years later, in 1913, there were already 6330.
The port was also used by excursion steamers from Berlin, Spandau , Oranienburg and Hennigsdorf .
In the 1980s it had a total throughput of 300,000 t. In the 1990s it was up to 250,000 t.
In 2000, the previously independent operating company Hafen- und Umschlaggesellschaft Velten GmbH merged with the city's own Stadtwärme Velten GmbH to form Stadtwerke Velten GmbH , a city-owned company.
Current state
The port of Velten is at the end of the Velten branch canal at km 3.15. This branches off from the Havel-Oder waterway at km 15.3 north of Berlin. The total water area is 1.8 ha with a diving depth of 1.95 m.
It has three loading quays with a total length of 360 m, of which 225 m have a siding that enables it to transport, transship and store goods. On the north quay is a Portalwippdrehkran the volcano crane from Eberswalde erected. Two railroad tracks for water / rail transhipment run under this. The transshipment of goods requiring special surveillance has also been possible since August 2007.
The port's possible annual handling capacity is 0.75–1.00 million t per year. The port is far from that. In 2012, the total throughput was 91,936 t. (of which 80,808 t in receipt and 11,128 t in dispatch) Mainly building materials were received and agricultural and forestry products were dispatched.
