A sex shop , erotic shop or erotic shop is a retail outlet , the sex toys , lingerie , pornographic magazines and movies and contraceptives sold. Often, pornographic films are shown in video booths for a cash deposit or pornographic "performances" ( peep shows or sex shows) are offered.

history

Beate Uhse opened the world's first sex shop in Flensburg in 1962 under the name “Specialist for Marriage Hygiene”. In a house built in 1734 at Angelburger Straße 58, numerous guests appeared on the opening date on December 17, 1962, including neighbors and employees of the municipal building authorities and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry . Of the invited local press, only one reporter came from the Südschleswigschen Heimatzeitung , while representatives from Flensborg Avis and the Flensburger Tageblatt stayed away. The shop was divided into three departments: the first was a specialist shop for hygiene articles, the second a specialist bookstore with 200 titles including an antiquarian bookstore, which - as required by the authorities - had to have a separate entrance with a door due to educational literature, and as third department a consultation room "for personal discussion with the experienced employees of the mail-order company." Since the Flensburg shop made a profit in the first year, the entrepreneur opened the second sex shop in Hamburg .

Occurrence, offer

In Germany and Austria there are numerous individual companies and various chain stores. The best known are Beate Uhse , Orion , ART-X (Austria only) and Dr. Müller (owned by Beate Uhse AG). In larger cities, the erotic shops are often located in the train station district or in industrial centers. In order to distance oneself from the red light image , more attention is paid to a bright and friendly specialist store atmosphere and video booths are dispensed with. There were also initiatives to set up sex shops for women only. There are also erotic shops specializing in condoms , which, however, clearly stand out from the appearance of traditional sex shops. Here you can often find erotic and other joke and gift items, but no pornographic items. In the area of fetish and BDSM there are specialized shops that offer special items of clothing, equipment or SM furniture in addition to special reading (corresponding magazines, books, special catalogs, films, etc.) . Corresponding articles can also be obtained from adult shops on the Internet. This conveys a certain anonymity and there is no direct "confrontation" with sales staff. This is why there has been a certain decline in classic sex shops since around the year 2000.
