The Erskine Ice Harbor ( Norwegian Erskinebukta , translated Erskine Bay ) is a 5 km wide and 10 km long ice harbor with southeast expansion on the Princess Astrid coast of the East Antarctic Queen Maud Land . It represents a more or less permanent bay on the front of an ice shelf off the coast .
The crew of the icebreaker USS Glacier , who surveyed this stretch of coast during the first Operation Deep Freeze in March 1956 , named it General Erskine Bay . The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names changed this name in 1956 to better reflect the real nature of the property. It is named after General Graves Blanchard Erskine (1897–1973) of the United States Marine Corps , who, as head of the special duties of the United States Navy, helped prepare the expedition for the first Operation Deep Freeze.
