The Kathrein SE (self spelling: KATHREIN SE ) was a German manufacturer of antennas and satellite technology . The company's headquarters are in Rosenheim ( Upper Bavaria ).
The company is the oldest and for many years was the largest antenna manufacturer in the world. Kathrein produced z. B. the base station antennas of cell phone towers for GSM and UMTS or combi roof antennas for various car manufacturers such. B. BMW for radio, TV, mobile communications and GPS. The typical 2 m band taxi and 4 m band police radio antennas with spring bases are also from Kathrein. Satellite parabolic antennas for radio and television reception, like most satellite receivers, are developed by Kathrein in Germany, and some are also produced there. Various accessories and the Linux-based satellite receivers are OEM goods from the Far East. Many radio and television antenna towers (with red and white striped tips) contain Kathrein antennas. The associated transmitters mostly come from Rohde & Schwarz .
history
The company was founded by Anton Kathrein senior , an electrical engineer from Rosenheim, in 1919 as a workshop for the manufacture of lightning protection systems. It was only with the advent of broadcasting decades later that antenna construction became the focus of production. From April 1942, the company employed around 40 female forced laborers from the Ukraine (see biography ).
After the death of Anton Kathrein sen. In 1972 his son Anton Kathrein junior took over . the company while he was still studying business administration . By 2011 he had increased annual sales from 51 million marks to 1.3 billion euros. This makes Kathrein the world market leader in many areas of antenna technology today and, according to its own statements, the largest and oldest antenna manufacturer in the world. In 2012, the Kathrein Group employed over 6,800 people in 62 companies around the world and expected sales of around 1.4 billion euros.
In 1983 the Katek company was founded as a new, independent member of the Kathrein Group. As an electronics service provider, the Katek Group includes Katek GmbH for production, Schomandl GmbH for development and high-frequency electronics , as well as Katek Service GmbH Wetzlar and ESC Elektronik Service Chiemgau GmbH for aftercare, repair and service.
As part of a so-called asset deal , Grassauer Görler-Telekom GmbH took over TechnoTrend GmbH with its locations in Erfurt and Unterföhring near Munich from the Kathrein group of companies in February 2009 . The TechnoTrend brand is to be retained and incorporated into Kathrein's international sales activities.
Furthermore, in May 2010, Blaupunkt Antenna Systems GmbH & Co. KG with approx. 250 employees was acquired by the industrial holding Aurelius AG to strengthen the automotive supplier division . With this expansion of the so-called original equipment business , the company has become one of the world's leading manufacturers of car antennas with development and production facilities in Germany, Portugal, Brazil and China.
Anton Kathrein jun. died in 2012 at the age of 61. On November 28, 2012, his son Anton Klaus Kathrein took over the management.
On October 20, 2015, he announced the closure of the production site in Nördlingen due to the poor order situation . 700 jobs were affected. In September 2016, the fixed assets of the Kathrein plant in Nördlingen were auctioned online by the auction house Troostwijk Auctions GmbH & Co. KG as part of the location resolution .
In November 2017, Hans-Joachim Ziems, known as a restructuring engineer, was appointed to the Executive Board as CRO, who was able to sell the company in major parts by 2019 and thus contributed to maintaining jobs.
On February 20, 2018, the management announced the closure of the plants in Niederndorf (Austria) and Bělá nad Radbuzou (Czech Republic), 230 and 140 jobs respectively were affected by this measure.
On October 29, 2018 it was announced that KATHREIN Automotive GmbH, Hildesheim (the former Blaupunkt Antenna Systems) including the associated foreign locations in Brazil, China, Mexico, USA and Portugal had been sold. The buyer was the automotive supplier Continental AG . According to the information in its consolidated financial statements, KATHREIN Automotive GmbH achieved sales of € 93.3 million in the 2017 calendar year, of which € 60.2 million came from Germany.
On November 26, 2018, the antenna manufacturer announced that it would be parting with another 250 employees by the end of 2019 as part of the restructuring with the help of a volunteer program.
In February 2019 it was announced that the company would be almost completely sold to Ericsson , the entire core business with the development and production of cellular antennas with around 4,000 employees will be sold, only the areas of broadcasting technology, IoT and digital systems (SAT) will remain with around 350 worldwide Employees still left.
In May 2019, Hans-Joachim Ziems announced that he would also have to sell the radio technology and satellite reception division. He himself will leave the company with the sale of this last notable business area. This is the end of the history of the antenna manufacturer Kathrein after 100 years. Anton Kathrein would then like to concentrate on the Internet of Things.
It was previously announced that Anton Kathrein II, who died in 2012, had put the company under his leadership with a consequent expansion policy in economic difficulties. Investments were made even in loss-making business sectors, and the company still lacked liquidity planning. This would have led to heavy losses and high levels of debt. His son, Anton Kathrein, was appointed as his successor completely unprepared. When the banks finally called various loans due, the divisions began to be sold.
With the handover of the mobile communications division to Ericsson , the entire board, including Hans-Joachim Ziems and Anton Kathrein, resigned. Jochen CW Vogt was appointed sole director to complete the restructuring.
