Erukkampattu or Erukkambuttu is a village with a population of around 3,000 in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu . Just outside the village there is an important Shiva temple from the Chola period.

location

Erukkampattu lies at an altitude of almost 400 m above sea level. d. M. approx. 55 km (driving distance) west of the district capital Vellore . The climate is tropical and warm; Rain falls mainly in the monsoon months of July to November.

population

The inhabitants of the place are predominantly Hindus ; other religious communities hardly play a role among the rural population of southern India. The female share of the population is around 5% less than the male.

economy

In the area around the village there is farming and some cattle breeding (chickens); There are small traders, craftsmen and day laborers in the village.

history

With interruptions mainly due to the Chola , the dynasties of the Pandyas (capital Madurai ) and the Pallavas (capital Kanchipuram ) ruled the region for a long time , but they often delegated the actual power to regional vassals. In the 14th century, Muslim rulers briefly occupied power, which then passed to the Hindu Vijayanagar empire, which in turn had to make way for the Nawabs of Karnatik (approx. 1690–1801). In the meantime, however, the British and French fought for supremacy in the region in the Carnatic Wars (1744–1763).

Attractions

Only attraction of the place is the late 9th or early 10th century and attributable to the god Vishnu consecrated Ranganatha Temple . The temple, which is surrounded by a wall with an imposing portal, differs from most of the Chola temples in the region because of its almost geometrical, albeit restored, gate and tower decor; it consists of a flat-roofed, closed vestibule ( mandapa ) and one of a transverse stepped tower structure ( vimana ). While the outer walls - apart from their pilasters - and niches are almost unadorned, there are numerous window windows ( kudus ) on the cornice fronts .
