Erwin Keller (archaeologist)

Erwin Richard Keller (born January 1, 1937 in Heimenkirch ; † August 5, 2014 in Munich ) was a German provincial Roman archaeologist . As a state curator, he was head of the soil monument preservation department at the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation from 1983 to 2001 .

Life

Keller first studied German at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich before moving to the Department of Prehistory . In 1967 he was at Joachim Werner (1909-1994) with a dissertation on the late Roman grave finds southern Bavaria doctorate .

On February 1, 1968, he began working for the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation. There he was responsible for the inventory of the above-ground monuments in Upper Bavaria. He then briefly headed the Department for Provincial Roman Archeology and the Department Upper Bavaria-South. From 1983 he headed the soil conservation department for a total of 18 years, succeeding Rainer Christlein (1940–1983), who died in the same year, until his retirement on December 31, 2001. During this time he campaigned in particular for the expansion of aerial archeology and geophysics begun by Christlein . In addition, Keller initiated the scheduled registration of the Bavarian monuments.

After his retirement, the archeologist and passionate photographer worked at the Munich City Museum to systematize the collection of old photo equipment there. On August 5, 2014, Keller died in Munich after a long illness. He was buried on August 19, 2014 in the Nordfriedhof.

Keller was a long-time member of the Association of State Archaeologists and from 1983 to 2002 secretary of the Bavarian Archeology Society.

In addition to his monographs, Keller wrote a large number of important scientific articles. His themes mostly revolved around the time of the Principate to late antiquity and into the transition period to the early Middle Ages .
