features

Construction of the Imago

Colored male adults of Erythrodiplax juliana are blue-black or black in color and differ greatly from younger males. While the abdomen , which measures an average of 19 millimeters in both sexes , is completely black or blue black in the colored males, it is brownish yellow to reddish brown in young animals of both sexes, whereby it becomes darker towards the abdomen. The tenth segment is yellowish to brownish. Just above the side keel there is a dark brown stripe, which is only very weakly pronounced on segments two and three. In addition, the strip is interrupted in the front area of segments four to seven. Another dark stripe can be found on top of segments eight and nine. The abdominal appendages are lighter and yellowish to brown even in colored animals.

While colored males are completely black in the back area of the trunk , this is matt dark blue or blue-black in young animals and becomes brownish towards the rear. The trunk itself is yellowish and often has a hint of red. The wings are transparent except for a very small, basal, brownish spot. The hind wings measure an average of 29 millimeters. The sash itself measures an average of 4 millimeters.

On the face, the flattened front , seen from the side, is colored light metallic violet-blue in the upper area. In the lower side areas there are brown marks, which spread more in young animals than in colored animals. The clypeus is green or brown in young animals and glossy black in colored animals.
