The ore mine Aumetz ( French Mine d'Aumetz , also: Mine de fer Bassompierre ) was an ore mine in Aumetz in northern Lorraine . Today it is part of the iron ore mining open-air museum Écomusée des mines de fer de Lorraine together with Neufchef .

history

Machine hall with trolley and mine locomotive, standard-gauge 40-ton Alstom electric locomotive behind.

The iron ore mine was built by the German-Belgian Société Métallurgique de Knutange (SMK), which was founded in 1895 and is based in Brussels in Aumetz. The first headframe was built in 1897. The steam winding machine came from the Dingler machine factory in Zweibrücken (built in 1898). The sinking work for the shaft began at the same time . The company owned a 400 hectare concession area. From 1900 the first ore was mined and delivered to the Kneuttingen steelworks (today: Knutange ). In the meantime, the work had been taken over by Peter Klöckner . The colliery colony , which was built between the old town and the mining area, dates from this early period .

In 1940 the French army blew up the daytime facilities in order not to hand over these vital raw materials directly to the enemy, but a year later the Klöckner works had rebuilt the headframe and new ore mills with modern, biconical drums. After the war in 1946, the conveyor system got new rope sheaves , and in 1963 a new reinforced concrete building was built for rope travel . In 1984 the company produced its promotion one. Since June 30, 1989, the facility can be visited as a museum together with Neufchef, where a museum was already operating five years earlier. The 35 meter high headframe is set up as a vantage point over the former mining region. The courtyard with numerous exhibits is also accessible outside of opening hours.
