Esimese öö õigus (in German The Right of the First Night ) is the title of an Estonian silent film by Balduin Kusbock from 1925 .

content

The plot for Esimese öö õigus is based - like the film Mineviku varjud made in the previous year - on the story of the Estonians who were oppressed by medieval feudalism . The national romantic theme of the centuries-long struggle for the independence of the Estonian people is the focus of the feature film. Important topics of the film are the social and legal inequality and the violence by the ruling classes.

The young Estonian Helja, a medical student, met her fiancé John during the War of Independence. An old professor familiarizes both of them with the folk traditions of Estonia and with some bitterness that not only he himself had to experience in the past. He also tells them the story of the Estonian farmer Mangu, who loved the serf Linda. According to her master's will, Linda should be kidnapped during the wedding ceremony and taken to his castle, according to the brutal medieval practice that the first night with the bride belongs to her master. Mangu did not want to accept this and led a desperate fight together with other farmers in honor of his virgin bride.

Helja and John are glad that such practices are a thing of the past and that they will emigrate to England.
