Baldwin Kusbock
Balduin Kusbock (* 1892 ; † January 25, 1933 in Tartu ) was an Estonian director , actor and producer . He is considered a pioneer in Estonian film history.
life and work
Balduin Kusbock was born in 1892. He studied in France and Germany .
Kuzbock worked as an actor and director in Estonia . As a guest director at the Vanemuine Theater in Tartu, he successfully staged Gerhart Hauptmann's drama The Sunken Bell, among others . From 1925 he owned his own studio theater in the second largest Estonian city.
Kusbock was also employed by the Tartu film production company Taara-Film . He is considered one of the Estonian film pioneers.
In 1925, Kusbock directed and wrote the screenplay for one of the first Estonian feature films, the silent film Esimese öö õigus (in German The Right of the First Night ). The drama, however, had little success. In 1930 Kusbock made his (probably) second silent film, Pühapäevakütid (in German "The Sunday Hunters "). The comedy was banned from performance in Estonia because of its harm to young people. Both films are considered lost.
Baldwin Kusbock struggled with an alcohol problem all his life. He died in the University of Tartu Mental Hospital in 1933 at the age of forty .
Appreciation
Balduin Kusbock was a controversial film visionary in the cultural life of his time. He propagated cinema as the form of representation of the future. In 1927 he wrote as a kind of manifesto in the Estonian magazine Filmileht :
“Truly, this is the progress that is putting cinema in place of theater. [...] The theater has remained too slow for the temperament of our time. "
