Esknish ( Scottish Gaelic Eisginnis ) is a hamlet on the Scottish Hebridean island of Islay . The village is located directly on the A846 seven kilometers southwest of the Port Askaig ferry terminal and eight kilometers northeast of Bowmore , the capital of the island. The closest localities are the small settlements of Ballymartin and Kilmeny . In 1841 there were 124 people in Esknish. Ten years later the population had dropped to 92. There are few inhabited buildings left in Esknish today. In 1867 there were eleven covered and two uncovered buildings in Esknish. In 1981 there were finally five roofed houses. With Emeraconart Cottage is a Grade II listed building is close Esknish on the A846.
