Espostoa guentheri is a species of plant in the genus Espostoa from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet honors Ernesto Günther from Valparaíso , whofinancially supportedthe German geographer and botanist Carl Troll in his research in Bolivia.

Espostoa guentheri grows shrubby with shoots branching from the base and reaches heights of up to 2 meters. The upright, light green shoots have a diameter of up to 10 centimeters. There are about 27 faintly humped ribs on which there are yellowish-white woolly areoles that are 1 centimeter apart. The approximately 15 dark yellow thorns are 0.5 to 2.2 inches long. The cephalium is up to 50 centimeters long and consists of reddish brown to gray wool and numerous thorns with a length of 4 to 6 centimeters.

The bell-shaped to tubular, yellowish white flowers are 8 centimeters long and 2.5 to 3 centimeters in diameter. Your pericarpel and the flower tube are covered with fine, light pink wool. The fruits are scaly.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Espostoa guentheri is common in Bolivia in the departments of Cochabamba , Chuquisaca and Santa Cruz at altitudes of about 800 to 1400 meters.

It was first described as Cephalocereus guentheri in 1931 by Walter Kupper . Urs Eggli placed the species in the genus Espostoa in 2005 . A synonym is Vatricania guentheri (Kupper) Backeb. (1951).

In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Near Threatened (NT)", d. H. listed as low risk.
