history

The club's own Estadio Alejandro Morera Soto in the Costa Rican city of Alajuela, one of the largest cities in the country with almost 50,000 inhabitants, was built from 1938 to 1942 and opened on January 18, 1942. It was then called the Estadio de Alajuela . Since that day it has been used by the local club LD Alajuelense as a venue for home games. Together with Deportivo Saprissa, the club is considered the most important club in Costa Rica and has won 24 national championships in its history. The club was also a founding member of the Primera División Costa Rica in 1921 . In addition to its numerous successes at national level, LD Alajuelense won the CONCACAF Champions' Cup twice in 1986 and 2004 , the highest cup competition for club teams in North and Central America. The stadium is operated 100% with solar power

The Estadio Alejandro Morera Soto can now accommodate 17,895 spectators. Since July 20, 1966, it has been named after Alejandro Morera Soto , arguably the best footballer Costa Rica has ever had. Alejandro Morera Soto (1909-1995) played in Europe for FC Barcelona and Hércules Alicante , among others , but his home club was LD Alajuelense. The stadium has also often hosted home games for the Costa Rican national soccer team . Since the actual home stadium, the old Estadio Nacional de Costa Rica in San José from 1924, was replaced by a new building opened in 2011 , either in this stadium or in the stadium of LD Alajuelense's greatest rival, Deportivo Saprissa, i.e. in the Estadio Ricardo Saprissa Aymá , the international matches played. In addition to football matches, concerts are also held here. Elton John and Iron Maiden have already played here .

The stadium hosted the 2014 U-17 Women's World Cup in Costa Rica.
