Esther Galil ( Hebrew אסתר גליל; * May 28, 1945 in Safi , Morocco ) is an Israeli chanson singer and songwriter . Her greatest success, Le jour se lève , was a number one hit in France in 1971 .

Life

Galil started her professional music career in the 1960s. Under the stage name "Jackie Galil" the single Oh! non .

In the early 1970s, Galil again carried her birth name, the singer signed a contract with Barclay Records , the most important independent record label in France at the time. Due to the huge success of the bluesy chanson Le jour se lève in 1971, Galil was initially considered the great hope of the French chanson. However, she was never able to build on her first hit on this scale. Other minor successes in France were Oh Lord (1971), Ma liberté (1972), and Harlem Song (1973). During those years Galil became close friends with the Israeli chanson singer Mike Brant , with whom she also toured.

For the German market, Galil recorded a German version of Le jour se lève in 1972 : Tomorrow is coming soon . Other German singles such as The girl who loves you , Sonja, come back and Shalom Shula Shalom followed, but remained unsuccessful. In 1976 Galil performed in the record kitchen .

Her first LP Ma liberté was not released until 1974. Two years later, Z. Land followed , which was significantly more inspired by rock and blues. In contrast to her debut, all of the compositions were by Galil herself, and a large part of the lyrics were written by her. The excerpt from the Song of Songs in the Old Testament, Le cantique des Cantiques, is set to music .

In the 1970s, several more singles by Galil were released, some in English. In the early 1980s, Galil took a long hiatus before making a comeback with Interdit par la loi in 1988 . In 2005 she finally reported back with the album Esther Galil and two compilations.

Galil now lives in Los Angeles and still performs occasionally, for example at the Paris Olympia . In March 2013 she made headlines when she took part in the French version of The Voice , The Voice, la plus belle voix , and received no approval from the prominent jury in the “Blind Audition”. The jury included the Canadian singer Garou , who had covered Galil's chanson Le jour se lève on his album Rhythm and Blues a year earlier . With Galil's appearance, Le jour se lève returned to the French singles charts for a week.
