Eubena Nampitjin

Eubena (Yupinya) Nampitjin (born July 1, 1921 in Tjiniadna , near the Canning Stock Route in Western Australia ; † March 11, 2013 ) was an Aboriginal painter of the Martu . She was one of the leading members of the group of Balgo artists.

Life

Eubena's clan lived nomadically in the north of the Great Sand Desert . She was one of six children. At a young age she lost her mother and also two of her sisters and a brother. Eubena Nampitjin married young and went with her husband to Billiluna Station , an Aboriginal mission station , where she had to do auxiliary work. She later moved to live with relatives who lived in the Old Balgo Mission, where she was employed as a goatherd. Eubena Nampitjin speaks several Aboriginal languages ​​and is one of the few Martu today who has a perfect command of the Kukatja language. She is considered to be an excellent expert on Aboriginal law.

She and her second husband started painting in the 1980s. Since 1995 she has been creating her works alone. Your work is of great power and spontaneity. They are characterized by the use of warm, red, orange and yellow colors, as well as dotted lines. Her paintings mainly reflect the dreamtime themes of Tingari (primal mother) and Wati Kutjarra (two-man dreamtime story). Other topics that she takes up are Tjumu (rainwater), Tjukarra (rock cave), Malu (kangaroo dream time), bush tomato , goanna , mouse, moon and dingo dream time.

Nampitjin's work is in public and private collections in Australia and overseas. Her paintings are exhibited in the Art Gallery of New South Wales , the National Gallery of Australia and the National Gallery of Victoria , for example . In Germany they were shown in the Sprengel Museum in Hanover, in the Museum of Ethnology in Leipzig , in the House of World Cultures in Berlin and in the Ludwig Forum for International Art in Aachen.

In 1998, Nampitjin won the Telstra Open Painting Award . In 2001 her works were listed in the magazine "Australian Art Collector" among the 50 most frequently collected paintings in Australia. She lives in the Aboriginal settlement of Balgo in Western Australia .
