description

Appearance and leaf

Eucalyptus odorata grows as a tree or in the form of the mallee - eucalyptus , this is a growth form that is more shrub -like than tree-shaped , there are usually several trunks that form a lignotuber , the stature heights of 5 to 10 meters, sometimes up to 15 Meters. The bark remains on the entire trunk and sometimes also on the larger branches, is gray, gray-brown or black, with white spots and fibrous pieces. There are oil glands both in the marrow and in the bark.

In Eucalyptus odorata , heterophylly is present. The leaves are always divided into a petiole and a leaf blade. On middle-aged specimens, the leaf blade is lanceolate to ovate, straight, with entire margins and dull green. The leaf blades of the same color on the top and bottom of the adult specimens are dull green or gray-green, are lanceolate, relatively thick, curved sickle-shaped, taper towards the base of the blade and have a pointed upper end. The raised lateral nerves extend from the median nerve at an acute or very acute angle. The cotyledons ( cotyledons ) are reversed kidney-shaped.

Inflorescence and flower

On the side of an inflorescence stem with a square cross-section, three to seven or up to eleven flowers stand together in a simple inflorescence . The flower buds are egg-shaped and not floured or frosted blue-green. The sepals form a calyptra that remains in place until flowering ( anthesis ). The smooth calyptra is hemispherical or conical, once or twice as long as the smooth flower cup (hypanthium) and just as wide as this. The flowers are white or creamy white.

fruit

The fruit is cylindrical, spindle-shaped or ovoid. The disc is indented, the fruit compartments are included.

Occurrence and endangerment

The natural range of Eucalyptus odorata is the center and the southeast of South Australia and the west of Victoria .

The sparse, grassy Eucalyptus odorata forest in South Australia was proposed by a government commission for classification as "critically endangered" because its distribution is rapidly decreasing.

Systematics

The first description of Eucalyptus odorata in 1847 by the German botanist Hans Hermann Behr and Diederich Franz Leonhard von Schlechtendal under the title South Australian plants II. Identification and description of the data collected by Behr in South Australia plant in Linnaea , Issue 20, p 657. This type of material has the inscription “ Massiger Baum, fairly common in dry places and on light soil. " on.
