Eudokia from Heliopolis
Eudokia (also: Eudoxia ) († around 107 or 114 in Heliopolis in Phenicia ) was a Christian martyr and saint .
Life
According to tradition, Eudokia came from Samaria , her nickname, "the Samaritan woman", may be explained, but from her later charity. According to legend, she initially led a revealing life and, as an attractive young woman, attracted numerous men with whom she is said to have been sinful. Through this she achieved great wealth before she finally met the Christian Germanus, who moved her to Christianity and to give up her way of life. Eudokia went through Heliopolis in penitential garb to see the bishop , Theodot, who baptized her . She released her servants and gave all her wealth to the poor. She withdrew into solitude, where she led a life of penance . During a renewed persecution of Christians, the Prefect Vincentius finally summoned Eudokia, who was highly honored for her holiness. Since she refused to sacrifice to the gods, he had her beheaded. Her martyrdom is dated to the time of Emperor Trajan , either in 107 or 114. The name Eudokias is also recorded in the Martyrologium Romanum .
