Eugène-Nestor de Kermadec (born May 21, 1899 in Paris , † April 12, 1976 in Paris ) was a French painter and graphic artist . He is one of the most important representatives of French abstract painting and cubism in the 20th century.

Life

Eugene de Kermadec was the son of a high school teacher from Guadeloupe . From 1915 to 1917 he studied sculpture at the École des Arts Decoratifs and later drawing at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris . Eugene de Kermadec was part of the artistic avant-garde scene in Paris at the time. His early style is cubism . In 1929 he became friends with Chaim Soutine , Amedeo Modigliani and Robert Desnos . From this time he exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants in Paris and at other group exhibitions. His first solo exhibition took place in 1929 at the Simon Gallery in Paris.

Later, his painting began to focus almost exclusively on the female body, the plastic forms of which Eugene de Kermadec translated into abstracting surfaces and clear lines. The Leiris Gallery in Paris dedicated exhibitions to him in 1946 and 1957, 1973 and 1977. Eugene de Kermadec took part in numerous exhibitions abroad ( Berlin 1929, Tokyo 1933, Toronto 1949, Stuttgart 1960 etc.). In 1959 de Kermadec was a participant in documenta 2 in Kassel in the painting department . Eugène de Kermadec is also known as a tennis player and then as an international tennis referee. He was a good friend of Francis Ponge , for whose books he made illustrations .
