Eugène Leroy
Eugène Leroy (born August 8, 1910 in Tourcoing , † May 10, 2000 in Wasquehal ) was a French painter .
life and work
In 1931 Eugène Leroy began studying at the École des Beaux-Arts in Lille and Paris, but soon went his own way. In 1936 he traveled to the Netherlands for the first time and saw works by Rembrandt that made a lasting impression on him. In 1956 he left for Spain and studied Goya , Zurbarán , Velasquez and El Greco . He then moved to Italy (Florence, Arezzo and Urbino) and Leroy discovered the work of Masaccio for himself . In 1972 Eugène Leroy went to New York and Washington and saw works by Mark Rothko . Apart from the art scene, he worked in the northern French province until his death.
Eugène Leroy cannot be assigned to the art movements of the 20th century. He works neither expressionist nor figuratively and he cares little about the separation of figuration and abstraction . Frequently recurring motifs are nudes, portraits and still lifes. During the painting process, layers of paint are applied using the impasto technique, which, on closer inspection, condense to form an inkling of a figure or a face.
The art critics Bernard Marcadé , Éric de Chassey , Denys Zacharopoulos , as well as the philosopher Paul Audi and many others have written about Eugène Leroy.
The Michael Werner Gallery represents Eugène Leroy.
Eugène Leroy has exhibited in numerous internationally renowned museums and participated in the 21st São Paulo Biennale in 1991 , in documenta IX in Kassel in 1992 and in the 46th Venice Biennale in 1995 .
