Eugen Bregant the Younger (born January 5, 1937 in Graz ; † June 3, 2003 in Graz, Styria ) was an entomologist , botanist and zoologist at the Landesmuseum Joanneum in Graz.

Life

Bregant was the only child of Major General Eugen Bregant and his wife Josefine. The father, in command of Infantry Regiment No. 1 and an officer in the Austrian Armed Forces in the First Republic, died before he was born on November 18, 1936.

Due to the war, Bregant attended elementary school in Langegg , then in Gabersdorf and after the war in Graz. After graduating from high school in 1956, he began studying mining at the Montanistische Hochschule Leoben . During the holidays, Bregant hired himself out as a holiday worker in the Fohnsdorf Unter Tag mine, in a coal mine in the Ruhr area, in the Seegraben mine near Leoben , as well as in oil production for the Austrian Mineral Oil Administration in Neusiedl an der Zaya . In 1958 he married Hedda Reininger, gave up his studies in Leoben and moved to Graz, where he started teaching natural history at the university . Economic problems forced him to give up his studies and take up employment in a construction company. In 1959 and 1967 his two children Marina Barbara and Aldo Eugen were born.

Career

In search of literature, reference material and, above all, professional contacts for his passion, the preoccupation with insects, he met Erich Kreissl from the Department of Animal and Plant Science at the Landesmuseum Joanneum in 1958 . Eugen Bregant was able to win over him for insect research into Styria and for work on the collections. Finally, in 1974, he got a job in the upper class of museums at the now independent department of zoology headed by Kreissl. Pretty soon, however, there were considerable differences between him and his mentor Kreissl. In 1979, the museum management enabled Eugen Bregant to move to the botany department. As knowledge of host plants has always been important to him as a buprestid specialist, he quickly found his way into his new field of work. He was entrusted with the care of the herbarium , in particular the fern and flowering plants collection, as well as the editing work for publications of the department and the design of exhibitions.

His participation in the field work for the floristic research and documentation of Styria, which was carried out by the Department of Botany together with the Floristic-Geobotanical Working Group in the Natural Science Association for Styria as part of the project to map the flora of Central Europe in Styria, resulted in special publications . He has also carried out excursions with well-known plant experts such as Willibald Maurer and Helmut Melzer for floristic research in eastern Austria and neighboring areas.

Towards the end of 1994 he became seriously ill and was retired. When his health had improved somewhat, he continued his floristic and, above all, entomofaunistic activity. A slight stroke could only limit this due to impaired walking ability, but not prevent it. A second stroke meant the end.

The Biology Center of the Upper Austrian State Museum received the insect collection from his estate . During his lifetime, Eugen Bregant handed over a collection of digger wasps and a collection of Eastern Austrian wild bees to the Landesmuseum Joanneum .

After his death, a newly discovered animal species was named in his honor, the mite Imparipes breganti .
