Eugene Gabriel

Eugen Gotthard Gabriel (born February 3, 1937 in Dornbirn ) is an Austrian linguist , dialectologist and name researcher .

Life

Eugen Gabriel attended elementary school in Dornbirn-Oberdorf and the Bundesrealgymnasium Dornbirn, where he graduated in 1955. From 1955 he studied classical philology, German, philosophy and linguistic psychology at the University of Vienna , and from 1957 also psychology. From 1958 to 1960 he did his doctoral thesis with Eberhard Kranzmayer on the vocalism of the dialects of Dornbirn, Hohenems and Lustenau in the Vorarlberg Rhine Valley .

Gabriel was in 1963 for six weeks staff at the University of Zurich and worked on the creation of the Linguistic Atlas of German Switzerland with and was designed by Rudolf Hotzenköcherle in the methodology for Sprachatlas the necessary and exploration work introduced. With a research grant from the Federal Ministry for Education, Art and Culture , he was able to begin his habilitation thesis with Eberhard Kranzmayer on the development of Old High German vocal qualities in Upper German dialects in 1963 . After a research stay at the University of Innsbruck (1965) and in Marburg / Lahn (1966), he was a university assistant at the German Institute of the University of Vienna from 1967 to 1969 and was able to complete his habilitation thesis and habilitation with the Venia legendi language and older literature . From 1969 Gabriel worked as an academic advisor at the University of Freiburg and in 1975 became professor for German linguistics.

Gabriel's most important work is the Vorarlberg Language Atlas , which was largely developed by him and published between 1985 and 2006, including the Principality of Liechtenstein, West Tyrol and Allgäu (VALTS) . Retired in 1994, he lives in Wangen im Allgäu .
