Eugene Kapretz

Eugen Kapretz (born February 23, 1870 in Laibach ; † June 29, 1926 at Hirschenau Castle near Griffen ) was an Austrian general of the artillery .

Life

Born the son of a district court president, Kapretz studied law in Graz after attending grammar school in Ljubljana . During his studies in 1890 he became a member of the Carniola Graz fraternity . During his time as a one-year volunteer , he decided to pursue a military career and in 1891 became a lieutenant in Corps Artillery Regiment No. 11 . After attending the war school from 1895 to 1897, he became a general staff officer of the 12th Infantry Brigade in Klagenfurt . In 1899 he was transferred to Warasdin as a captain in the Division Artillery Regiment No. 39 . In 1901 he joined the General Staff with assignment to the 35th Infantry Division in Klausenberg. From 1902 he worked as a teacher of tactics at the artillery cadet school in Vienna . In 1906 he was transferred to the 13th Corps Command in Agram, where in 1908 he served as chief of staff of the 36th Infantry Troop Division . In 1909 he became a major . From 1909 to 1912 he worked as a teacher at the war school. In 1912 he was promoted to lieutenant colonel and in 1914 transferred to the operations department of the Second Army Command as a colonel . In 1915 he took command of the field cannon regiment No. 14 , in 1917 he became the commander of the 15th field artillery brigade and in 1918 an artillery general in the 11th army command . He took over command of the entire Isonzo Army formations .

After the First World War he became the manager of the Silberegg estate and the estate of the Helldorff family. He became a member of the Heimatschutzverband, was head of the St. Veit district and, from 1923, worked as regional director for Carinthia.
