Eugen Alexander Megerle von Mühlfeld (born May 3, 1810 in Vienna , † May 24, 1868 in Hietzing ) was an Austrian liberal lawyer and politician.

Life

Eugen Megerle was the son of the Imperial Court and General Office Tax Officer Johann Georg Megerle von Mühlfeld and his wife Katharina, née Paschka. Mühlfeld studied at the University of Vienna and earned two doctorates (philosophy and that of jurisprudence ). He became one of the most successful and respected lawyers in Vienna, was a member of the Frankfurt National Assembly for the 1st constituency of Austria under the Enns in Vienna-Innere Stadt ( Café Milani / Pariser Hof fraction ) and later a member of the Lower Austrian Parliament and the Austrian Imperial Council and President the Viennese Bar Association etc. Mühlfeld campaigned for the abolition of the death penalty and for jury jurisdiction . The May Laws (1868) go back to his initiative ; they weakened the provisions of the Concordat of August 18, 1855.

Regardless of his high social position, he was often in financial embarrassment because, in addition to his official family, he also had to support one of his lovers, Johanna von der Goog.

Honors

Since 1872 the Mühlfeldgasse in the 2nd district of Vienna Leopoldstadt has been commemorating Eugen Megerle von Mühlfeld and the natural scientist Karl Megerle von Mühlfeld (1765–1840).

He is buried in an honorary grave in the Vienna Central Cemetery (group 32A, number 2).
