Eugen von Baumgarten

Eugen Karl Joseph von Baumgarten (born May 5, 1865 in Regensburg , † December 9, 1919 in Munich ) was a German painter , illustrator , caricaturist and commercial artist in Bavaria.

Eugen von Baumgarten was born as the fifth of six children of the pharmacist Ludwig von Baumgarten and his wife Pauline nee. Hartmann was born in Regensburg on Kornmarkt in the Zum Mohren pharmacy. His mother died in November 1866 after giving birth to their last child. From 1891, Eugen von Baumgarten lived as an art institution owner and painter at Entenbachstrasse 75, Schlotthauerstrasse 6 and later at Lothstrasse 12 in Munich. He was married to Sophie Eva Marie Friedlein (1869–1956). Eugen Roth remembers that von Baumgarten, as a biological cousin, often visited his father (Hermann Roth) and for him was the epitome of the Schwabing artist. His claim: “He had more humor than talent.” Baumgarten was friends with the Munich writer Julius Beck , for whom he a. a. made illustrations during his time as editor of the Humoristische Blätter .

Published by Baumgarten a. a. in the Munich humorist sheets (1885), in: Die Geissel. The Bavarian Kladderadatsch (1895–1896, no more published), in the Kikeriki calendar (daily newspaper) and the youth . He drew for Oktober-Fest newspapers and created posters for Munich breweries such as Wagner-Bräu since the 1890s.

Pseudonym and signature

A pseudonym for example in Die Geissel. The Bavarian Kladderadatsch : E. Vaube. Baumgarten often signed with the initials EvB.
