Eugene Berman (born November 4, 1899 in Moscow as Evgenij Gustavovič Berman , † December 14, 1972 in Rome ) was a Russian- born, later American surrealist painter .

Life

Eugene Berman grew up in a wealthy family in Russia and traveled to the European continent at an early age. 1919-1922 he studied art and architecture in Paris and Rome. In 1920 he studied at the Académie Ranson with Pierre Bonnard (1867–1947), Édouard Vuillard (1868–1940) and Félix Vallotton (1865–1925). From 1924 he took part in exhibitions, his first solo exhibition was in Paris in 1928. In New York he exhibited for the first time in 1932 from at Julian Levy. In 1935 he made his first trip to the USA , where he worked as a set designer in Hollywood . In 1938 he toured California and worked on murals in Santa Barbara . A citizen of the United States since 1944, he took part in the 1946 Bel Ami competition with his version of the subject The Temptation of Saint Anthony . In 1972 he died in Rome.

As an artist, he is considered a neo-romantic with a classical education who turned to surrealism. His works are represented in many large museums, especially of course in the USA. In 1954, Berman was elected a member ( NA ) of the National Academy of Design in New York . Since 1964 he was a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters .

Berman was married to Hollywood actress Ona Munson from 1950 until her suicide .
