Eugene Delmar (born September 12, 1841 in New York City , † February 22, 1909 there ) was one of the leading US chess masters of the 19th century.

Chess career

Delmar was a four-time New York State Champion (1890, 1891, 1895 and 1897). In 1879 he played eight games against Samuel Loyd in New York and won 6: 2 (+5 = 2 −1). At the fifth United States Congress in 1880 he was sixth out of 10 players with 9.5 points from 18 games. Again in New York in 1888 he played an eight-game match against Samuel Lipschütz and won 5: 3 (+5 = 0 -3). At the sixth United States Congress in 1889, he was ninth out of 20 players with 18 points from 38 games. In the revenge competition in New York in 1890 he lost thirteen games against Samuel Lipschütz 4.5: 8.5 (+3 = 3 −7). Clearly, he lost a match against Albert Hodges in Skaneateles in 1892 , and he lost all five games. He did not play much better at the tournament in Manhattan in 1893: He was last of ten players with 2.5 points from nine games. At the tournament in New York in 1893, where Emanuel Lasker won with 13 points from 13 games, he was at least 3rd – 5th. (fifth after fine evaluation) with 8 points from 13 games. He almost lost a match against Carl August Walbrodt in New York in 1893 with 5: 6 (+4 = 2 −5). At the tournament in New York in 1894, in which William Steinitz won, he was on the 5th – 6th. Place (sixth after fine scoring) with 5 points from 10 games. He clearly lost a match against Adolf Albin in New York in 1894 with 2: 5 (+2 = 0 −5). In a very busy tournament in Cambridge Springs in 1904, he was last of sixteen players with 4.5 points from 15 games.

With his best historical rating of 2658, he was in sixth place in the world rankings in July 1886.
