Eugene Robert Black
Eugene Robert Black (born May 1, 1898 in Atlanta , Georgia , † February 20, 1992 ) was an American financial manager. He served as the third president of the World Bank ( International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) ) and thus the World Bank Group (from July 1949 to December 1962). During his time, the World Bank Group was expanded to include the International Finance Corporation (IFC) in 1956 and the International Development Organization (IDA) in 1960 .
Life
Eugene Black was born in Atlanta on May 1, 1898. His father Eugene Robert Black Sr. later became the third president of the Federal Reserve System . The younger Black graduated from the University of Georgia . During World War I he served in the United States Navy .
On July 19, 1924, he and Dolly Blalock Black († 1928) had a son in Atlanta, whom they also called Eugene Robert Black, an investment banker and playwright. He died on April 24, 2000.
He later married Susette Heath Black. Other children are Elizabeth Black Campbell and William H. Black.
career
After the war, Black worked for the investment company Harris, Forbes & Co. , in which he eventually became a partner.
In 1933, Black became vice president of Chase National Bank (it later merged with Chase Manhattan Bank , now JPMorgan Chase & Co. ).
In 1947 he became Executive Director of the World Bank for the USA. When John J. McCloy resigned as World Bank president, Black was nominated against his will as president.
Honors
On December 9, 1963, one year after his resignation as President of the World Bank, the auditorium of the newly built C-building was dedicated to him in his presence. The address was given by Douglas Dillon, United States Secretary of the Treasury. The Eugene R. Black Auditorium , along with Building C, was later demolished to make way for the new main complex.
On April 21, 2003, the auditorium in the H building was officially renamed in honor of Eugene R. Black. President Wolfensohn inaugurated it.
