James Wolfensohn (2003)

James David "Jim" Wolfensohn (born December 1, 1933 in Sydney , Australia ; † November 25, 2020 in New York City , United States ) was an Australian-American economist and from 1995 to 2005 the ninth President of the World Bank .

Life

Born in Australia and later naturalized, the American of German-Jewish descent was a lawyer and banker and has been involved in the international stock exchange and banking business since 1963. He holds degrees from Sydney and Harvard University . At the Olympic Games in Melbourne in 1956 he was a member of the Australian Olympic fencing team .

On June 1, 1995, he became President of the World Bank. His second term began on September 27, 1999, when he was unanimously reappointed by the World Bank's Executive Board. This made him the third president to serve a second term at the World Bank. He was succeeded on June 1, 2005 by Paul Wolfowitz .

From June 11th to 14th, 2015 he took part in the 63rd Bilderberg Conference in Telfs-Buchen , Austria .

Honors

In 1994 Wolfensohn was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
In 1995 in May he was awarded the title of Knight of Honor for his commitment to the arts by Queen Elizabeth II . The governments of Australia, France, Germany, Morocco and Norway have also honored Mr. Wolfensohn.

2000 Honorary doctorate from Ben Gurion University of the Negev in Be'er Scheva , Israel
2004 Benjamin Franklin Medal for Distinguished Public Service of the American Philosophical Society
2006 he was for his commitment against poverty and exclusion of the Roma of the Theodor Heuss Prize awarded
2011 Honorary Doctorate from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem
