Eurobest Festival

The Eurobest Festival is an event for the European creative industry and has been a complement to the Cannes International Advertising Festival since it was founded in 1988 . The event is based on a creative competition and has been supplemented by a congress since 2008.

Development from a creative award to a creative festival

In the early years only the categories TV / Cinema , Outdoor , Print and Packaging & Design were advertised. There are now ten categories: Radio was added in 2004 and Interactive in 2005 , Direct and Integrated followed in 2006 and Media in 2007 . In 2008 Sales Promotion was separated from Direct and has been a separate category ever since. In order to recognize not only individual works, but also the overall creativity of an agency, the competition for the European Agency of the Year has been held since 2001 . This award goes to the agency that has the most shortlist and winner points at the award.

Until 2002, only one creation won "its" category, since 2003 gold, silver, bronze and the highest award, the Grand Prix, have been graded.

The prizes were awarded in London until 2004, when “Eurobest Live” was a 30-minute online ceremony that replaced the actual award ceremony. This changed again in 2008 when the pure creative award became a three-day festival, the highlight of which is the award ceremony. In addition to seminars, workshops and the exhibition of the submitted work, the festival also offers numerous opportunities for international networking. In contrast to the Cannes festival , where works are submitted from all over the world and the congress deals with global developments in the advertising industry, Eurobest is oriented towards Europe .

The festival is organized by the English company International Advertising Festival (IAF) based in London . IAF also hosts the Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival , Dubai Lynx and Spikes Asia with the support of country representatives. In Germany this is the Weischer Mediengruppe .

In 2010 the festival took place from December 6th to 8th in Hamburg .

Submissions

The agencies receive points for their place and victory, which are included in national creative rankings, as in Germany in that of w & v and Horizont. At the end of the year they calculate the most creative agencies from all points. At the end of 2008 a heated discussion was held on the subject of "Reduction of Award Submissions". It was criticized that agencies invest too much money in taking part in competitions in difficult economic times. There was no general competition boycott, but it is expected that 2009 will be more selective.

Eurobest was not affected in 2008. The number of submissions continued to grow:

With a total of 1,359 entries, Germany was the nation with the highest number of entries (plus 18.7%), followed by Sweden (727 works) and France (598 entries).

All works are assessed by international juries, the jurors nominate the respective national festival representatives. In 2008 there were five German jurors: Jürgen Vossen (Creative Art Director & Chief Creative Officer, HEIMAT \ Berlin), Kurt-Georg Dieckert (Chief Creative Officer, TBWA \ Germany), Oliver Viets (Executive Creative Director, Elephant Seven \ Hamburg) , Christian Schmalzl (Chief Executive Officer, MediaCom Group \ Germany) and Heinrich Paravicini (Chief Executive Officer, Mutabor Design \ Hamburg).

In 2008, Germany was the most successful nation with 81 awards, ahead of Sweden (41) and Belgium (23). Among other things, two Grand Prix were won: one in the “Design” category for North Pole Hamburg and one in “Sales Promotion” for Heimat Berlin. The top 3 German winners are Jung von Matt (3 × gold, 7 × silver, 3 × bronze), TBWA (4 × gold, 2 × silver, 2 × bronze) and DDB (1 × silver and numerous bronze awards). In addition, the title "Agency of the Year" went to DDB Germany, Berlin and TBWA Paris, while Nordpol Hamburg took third place in the category "Interactive Agency of the Year".
