concept

As early as 2017, the head of the delegation, Paul Clarke, announced that he wanted to organize a national preliminary decision based on the model of the Melodifestivalen . Among other things, he invited the producer of the melody festival Christer Björkman to Australia to develop concepts. On October 14, 2018, SBS finally presented the first Australian preliminary decision. On February 9, 2019, the Australian contribution was chosen in a live broadcast with ten artists. The day before, the jury voted in a jury show. The winner of the preliminary decision was determined 50% by the jury and 50% by the audience.

The jury consisted of the following members:

  • Christer Björkman - producer of the Melodifestivalen
  • Fifa Riccobono - former managing director of Albert Music
  • Milly Petriella - Artistic Director of the Australasian Performing Right Association
  • Josh Martin - Editor in Chief, Entertainment at SBS
  • Paul Clarke - Australian Head of Delegation

The broadcast took place at the Gold Coast Convention Center on the Gold Coast. In an application process, the city prevailed against Sydney and Melbourne .

Choice of contribution

From October 14, 8:00 a.m. to November 4, 2018, 11:59 a.m., composers had the opportunity to submit a contribution to the Australian television station SBS. In addition, SBS had asked composers and producers to submit a contribution for the show.

On November 27, 2018, SBS announced that they had received over 700 songs. The show's producers selected a total of 20 songs, which were then shortened to ten songs. These ten songs were worked out by producers in order to then find suitable interpreters for these songs. According to SBS, some big names in Australia should also participate in the preliminary round.

On December 2, 2018, SBS released the first four subscribers. Three more participants followed on December 18, 2018. On January 17, 2019, SBS presented the last three participants.
