Evžen Rošický

Evžen Rošický (/ ˈɛvʒɛn ˈrɔʃɪʦkiː /, born October 15 or October 18, 1914 in Olomouc ; † June 25, 1942 in Prague ) was a Czechoslovak athlete, sports journalist and resistance fighter against National Socialism .

Life

Rošický graduated from Charles University in Prague with a law degree . He was a member of SK Slavia Prague from 1931 to 1941 and was a member of the Czechoslovak Olympic team in Berlin in 1936 .

In 1939 he set a Czechoslovakian record over 400 m hurdles with a time of 56.9 s. In 1935 he was also the record holder of the ČSR over the 800 m distance with 1: 54.6 min.

From 1935 Rošický worked as a sports journalist a. a. at the Rudé právo and the Haló noviny , in the same year he had also joined the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia .

After the German occupation of the country Rošický belonged together with his father Jaroslav Rošický to the anti-fascist resistance group Nemo . After the assassination attempt on Reinhard Heydrich , the illegal group was discovered by the Gestapo and Rošický was arrested on June 18, 1942. On June 25, at 6:40 p.m., he was executed along with his father and four other people on the Kobylisy shooting range in Prague. There is a grave site in the central cemetery in Olomouc, but it is not certain whether Rošický's body is actually there.

Between 1947 and 1989, the international Evžen Rošický Memorial of Athletes was held in Prague every year. The Evžena Rošického stadium in Prague is named after Evžen Rošický .
