Eva-Maria Neher (born Ruhr, born November 22, 1950 in Mülheim an der Ruhr ) is a German biochemist. She is the founder of the XLAB , the Göttingen experimental laboratory for young people, and was its head for a long time.

Life

From 1969 to 1973 Eva-Maria Neher studied biochemistry , organic chemistry and microbiology at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen and graduated with a diploma in 1974. In 1977 she received her doctorate with a thesis on the regulation of the biosynthesis of poly-β-hydroxybutyric acid in Alcaligenes eutrophus H16 .

From 1977 to 1978 Eva-Maria Neher worked as a scientific assistant at the Society for Radiation and Environmental Protection in Göttingen and at the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry in the Molecular System Design department. From 1978 to 1985 she was employed as a research assistant at the Institute for Physiological Chemistry at the University of Göttingen.

Following a family break, Eva-Maria Neher began to conduct experimental courses in chemistry and biology at the Free Waldorf School in Göttingen in 1993 .

From 1996 to 1998 Eva-Maria Neher developed the first concept for setting up an experimental laboratory for schoolchildren.

From 1998 to 2000 she created the scientific and didactic concept for the exhibition “Fascination Plant Breeding” for KWS Saat  SE in Einbeck. The exhibition was part of Expo 2000 . In October 2000 the XLAB  - Göttingen Experimental Laboratory for Young People was founded, of which Eva-Maria Neher was director and managing director until the end of 2018. Eva-Maria Neher has been married to Nobel Prize winner Erwin Neher since 1978 . She is the mother of five children.

Awards

Eva Maria Neher was awarded the Lower Saxony Order of Merit in 2002 for her social commitment . In 2005 she received the Communication Prize of the Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology , and in 2007 she was awarded the Lower Saxony State Prize. In recognition of her academic career and her contributions to scientific education, the Faculty of Chemistry at the University of Göttingen awarded her an honorary professorship in October 2009. In 2013 she was awarded the Cross of Merit 1st Class of the Federal Republic of Germany. In 2018 she was awarded the Lower Saxony State Medal. In 2019 she was awarded the initiative price of the Susanne and Gerd Litfin Foundation .

Offices

Eva-Maria Neher has chaired the University Council of the Europa Universität Flensburg since 2014, and was President of the Society of German Natural Scientists and Doctors (GDNÄ) from January 2015 to December 2016 . She has been a liaison professor of the German National Academic Foundation since 2011, president of the Network of Youth Excellence eV (NYEX) board since 2014, chairwoman of the XLAB foundation board since 2008, and a member of the university council of the HAWK - University of Applied Sciences and Arts Hildesheim, Holzminden, Göttingen and member of the board of trustees of the Laser Laboratory Göttingen .
