Gerd Litfin

Gerd Litfin (born June 20, 1948 in Hanover ) is a German physicist and entrepreneur. From 2008 to 2010 he was President of the German Physical Society .

Live and act

Litfin studied physics at the University of Hanover , where she received her doctorate and habilitation for work in the field of quantum optics. The dissertation took place in 1977 on the subject of continuous color center lasers . In 1983 he became a private lecturer and in 1988 an adjunct professor at the University of Hanover. During research stays at Rice University in Houston and at the University of Paris-Nord as well as in numerous publications, he dealt with optics and laser technology .

In 1983 Litfin joined the management of Spindler & Hoyer GmbH & Co. A management buy-out and company takeovers ultimately resulted in the LINOS Group, which Litfin, as chairman of the board, led the company to the stock exchange as LINOS AG in 2000 . In 2006, around 760 employees generated sales of almost 90 million euros. In the course of the takeover by the Qioptiq Group , Litfin and his family, as the main shareholders, sold their blocks of shares. Litfin left the board of directors and took over the chairmanship of the supervisory board.

In September 2004 Litfin received the Cross of Merit on Ribbon of the Federal Republic of Germany for his many years of work as an outstanding scientist and entrepreneur in the field of optics and optoelectronics. In December 2006 he and his wife founded the non-profit Susanne and Gerd Litfin Foundation , which is based in Göttingen.

From April 2008 he was President of the German Physical Society , from 2010 its Vice President for two more years. In 2011 he received the Federal Cross of Merit, 1st class .

In addition to other offices, he is chairman of the board of trustees of the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry and spokesman for the program committee German Agenda, Optical Technologies for the 21st Century.
