history

The foundation was initiated in 1987 by laser physicist Fritz Peter Schäfer , then director at the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry . Jürgen Troe and Dirk Basting were on the founding board . The institute initially resided in physical chemistry rooms at the Georg-August University in Göttingen ; the first director of the institute was Dr. H. Gerhardt. After expansion in rented rooms, the company moved into its own new building in 1990, which was expanded in 2003. Gerd Marowsky headed the institute from 2002 to 2008 . His successor from December 2008 to mid-2010 was Wolfgang Viöl . His successor is currently (08.2016) Alexander Egner , who established the research focus optical nanoscopy at the institute.

A same name was 2002 GmbH spun for commercial activities.
