The listed Protestant church in the Idstein district of Walsdorf was built between 1652 and 1663. It is the successor to a church that burned down in the turmoil of the Thirty Years' War in 1644 . It is built in the Gothic style, but has Romanesque elements as well as distinctive baroque paintings .

Location and description

The church is located in the northern area of Walsdorf at Knappegasse 2 . The churchyard is raised opposite the adjacent buildings and is accordingly secured with retaining walls. The church tower has a pointed spire and gable dormers . Three portals from the chicken church near Limbach , which was demolished in 1668, were used in Walsdorf. The choir is spanned by a star vault on head consoles. In contrast, in the nave there is a wooden barrel vault with painting by Veit Graf from 1660.

history

A Benedictine monastery was built in Walsdorf in the middle of the 12th century . In 1393 a chapel in Walsdorf is first mentioned in a document. The chapel is assigned to the parish with the associated community of Bad Camberg . It can be assumed that this chapel stood alone on the rock and was integrated into the monastery complex of that time. In 1456, St. Vincent is mentioned for the first time as the patron of this chapel .

In the 1540s the congregation becomes Lutheran . It also separates from Bad Camberg and receives its own pastor. In 1644 , Walsdorf , which has had city rights since 1358 , and the church as well, fell victim to a fire. This fire was triggered by Bavarian soldiers during the Thirty Years' War.

The church was rebuilt between 1652 and 1663. In 1697 an organ was installed. In 1832 extensive renovation and conversion work was carried out. In 1837 the cemetery, which was previously located in the churchyard, was moved to its current location due to lack of space. In 1858 the old organ was replaced by a new one by Gustav Raßmann . In 1917 the two large bells were confiscated for war purposes, the small bell remained. In 1920 two new bells are purchased.

In 1934, 1966, 1970, 1996 and 2005 renovation and refurbishment work was carried out. On the occasion of the celebrations for the 600th anniversary of the first mention of Christian life in Walsdorf, the church was named Christ Church.
