The church in Dornheim

The Evangelical Church in Dornheim , Lower Franconia, is the Evangelical Lutheran place of worship in the Iphöfer district. It stands on Altmannshäuser Straße in the middle of the village and belongs to the dean's office in Markt Einersheim .

history

Lutheran traditions in Dornheim go back to the time of the Reformation . At that time, between 1557 and 1627, a total of eight Protestant pastors worked in the Laurentius Church. Due to the armed conflicts in the Thirty Years' War , the village became Catholic again at the beginning of the 17th century, and the Lutheran pastors were expelled. Nevertheless, Protestant Christians still lived in the village and attended services in Mönchsondheim and Nenzenheim .

In 1820 the Lutheran Dornheimers were parish off to Hellmitzheim . Already at the end of the 18th century, when the Catholic parish church was to be rebuilt, it was hoped that a Simultaneum , a common use of the church for both denominations, would become possible in the future. However, the rule of the Prince of Schwarzenberg forbade their subjects to employ a Protestant pastor, and the Simultaneum was finally abandoned in 1845.

The evangelical community planned to build its own church from the middle of the 19th century. For this purpose, a collection began in 1848 . A total of 3499 guilders and 28 kreuzers were collected, so that the construction of a separate church could begin. In 1856 the people of Dornheim acquired a piece of land in the town center. Two years later, in 1858, the foundation stone was laid. The bells of the new church were rung for the first time on March 7, 1859.

The Protestant church is still a branch of the Hellmitzheim parish. Unlike the nearby Catholic Church, it survived the Second World War almost unscathed. A comprehensive renovation of the church was carried out between 1972 and 1975. The Lutheran Church is classified as an architectural monument by the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation .

architecture

The church is a simple hall with a retracted choir . It is not easted , but oriented to the south. Neo-Gothic elements predominate in the building . The north tower forms the entrance to the interior. The storeys of the tower are also externally recognizable through cornices , the tower ends with a pointed helmet. The individual yokes of the nave are structured by simple sandstone pilasters . The church illuminated by six arched windows.

Above the north portal an inscription reads : “This place of worship was built in 1858 Psalm 93.05. Your word is a right doctrine. Holiness is the adornment of your house forever ”.

Furnishing

Inside, the neo-Gothic elements that came to Dornheim at the time of construction still predominate. The center of the choir is the altar with the image of the crucifixion . It was created by the painter Wilhelm Braun from Ansbach and shows Maria, Johannes and Maria Magdalena at the feet of the crucified. The pulpit , the baptismal font, the organ case and the lecture cross also date from the end of the 19th century . The uniformity of the furnishings is made clear by the gold painting on all objects.
