The church in Rehweiler

The Evangelical Church (formerly St. Matthäus ) in the Lower Franconian village of Rehweiler is the only Moravian hall church in Bavaria. It was built on the edge of the Pietistic Schlösslein colony . The church is part of the Deanery of Castell .

history

Due to the size of the place, there was probably no church building in Rehweiler until the 18th century. The small Steigerwalddorf was also abandoned in the 15th century and lay desolate for a long time . Under Count Johann Friedrich zu Castell-Rüdenhausen , the estate and the village of Rehweiler were then repopulated in the first half of the 18th century. At that time, the place was still not equipped with a house of worship.

This only changed when Ludwig Friedrich zu Castell-Remlingen acquired Rehweiler as an allodial property in 1734 . The count was fond of the ideas of pietism and planned to build a branch of the Moravian Brethren here. First sermons were held in various houses in the village, before the construction of a church began in 1735. It was planned as a Moravian hall church and is therefore the only preserved church of its kind in Bavaria today.

The church was not completed until 1774, when the brethren community was already over. From then on it was converted into a Protestant parish church for the community. The Rehweiler church choir was established during the National Socialist era. A major renovation took place between 1973 and 1975. The aim of this renovation was to restore the old character of the church, so an 18th century altar was removed. The Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation classifies the church as an architectural monument.

architecture

The church presents itself as a hall building. The lighting of the building is guaranteed by the two-story window arrangement. The entrance is in the east of the building, while four rows of windows have been installed in the west. The church closes with a hipped roof . A roof turret was installed in the middle of the building. It is octagonal and has a large dome. The east side of the building is not externally recognizable as a transverse church .

Furnishing

The original furnishings, consisting of an altar, a pulpit and a small organ , came into the church in 1774. In the course of the renovation in the seventies, however, the rococo altar was removed and taken to the Schwanberg as a loan. A simple altar table replaced it. The pulpit, also a Rococo work , has stucco ornamentation with golden foliage on the staircase, sound cover and base. Galleries surround the interior of the church on three sides. The organ was placed on the north side.
