Ludwig Friedrich Graf und Herr zu Castell-Remlingen (nickname Lutz ; * February 23, 1707 in Castell ; † June 22, 1772 ibid) was ruler of the Grafschaft Castell from 1709 and 1717 and 1767 to 1772 . He shared the rule with his brothers Karl Friedrich Gottlieb , Wolfgang Georg II. And August Franz Friedrich . Count Ludwig Friedrich built a pietistic colony based on the model of Herrnhut in Rehweiler in the Steigerwald .

The county before Ludwig Friedrich

Before the rule of Count Wolfgang Georg II, there was a split into two lines in Castell, which had been carried out in the course of the 16th century. The Counts of Castell-Rüdenhausen had their residences in Wiesenbronn and Rüdenhausen, while their relatives of the Counts of Castell-Remlingen were in Castell and Remlingen . As a result, the dominion was divided and exposed to the Thirty Years' War of the 17th century even more defenseless.

Under the Count's direct predecessors, the reconstruction of the destroyed areas was pushed and new residents settled. For this purpose, Rehweiler was founded as a clearing settlement under Count Johann Friedrich zu Castell-Rüdenhausen in the Steigerwald, which was later placed under the administration of the Remlinger Line. At the same time, especially in the east of the Holy Roman Empire , a radical reformist form of Protestantism rose: Pietism, which saw itself as a return to the central concerns of the Reformation.

Life

Ludwig Friedrich was born on February 23, 1707 in Castell as the last child of Wolfgang Dietrich and his second wife Dorothea Renata, a born Countess of Zinzendorf and Pottendorf . Ludwig Friedrich had several half-sisters, a half-brother from his first marriage and seven other siblings. Two of the siblings died, only five reached adulthood. Via Nikolaus Ludwig von Zinzendorf , a relative of his mother, the young count was soon influenced by the ideas of pietism.

Count Ludwig Friedrich was sent to Frankfurt an der Oder to study, after which he toured Germany and France on a cavalier tour. Due to family ties, he then received a chamberlain post at the royal Danish court under Frederick IV. In 1732, when he came of age, he ended this position and began to rule the county together with his brothers.

Soon, in 1734, the count built up his own partial rule and acquired the village of Rehweiler from a castellian bailiff. With the purchase he drew the displeasure of his cousin Johann Friedrich zu Castell-Rüdenhausen, from whose recultivation program the village had emerged. Nevertheless, Ludwig Friedrich built his own simple hut in the village and used it as a residence from then on.

The Steigerwalddorf quickly became the center of the Pietist movement in Franconia. The count had an orphanage built that could accommodate up to 40 people. The village was converted into a Pietist colony modeled on Herrnhut , the simple construction still characterizes the small settlement today. In 1744, Count Ferdinande married Adriane, who supported his religious goals.

After the deaths of the brothers Wolfgang Georg II. And August Franz Friedrich in 1735 and 1767 respectively, Count Lutz, as he was called by his subjects, became a senior of the Castell family. Ludwig Friedrich Graf and Herr zu Castell-Remlingen died on June 22, 1772 in Castell, Lower Franconia.
