The county before Wolfgang Georg II.

Before the rule of Count Wolfgang Georg II, there was a split into two lines in Castell, which had been carried out in the course of the 16th century. The Counts of Castell-Rüdenhausen had their residences in Wiesenbronn and Rüdenhausen, while their relatives, the Counts of Castell-Remlingen, lived in Castell and Remlingen. As a result, the dominion was divided and exposed to the Thirty Years' War of the 17th century even more defenseless.

Under the predecessors of Wolfgang Georg, the Remlingen line had been split into two regional portions, the reconstruction of the destroyed areas and the resettlement of the decimated population were pushed. In addition, the counts oriented themselves towards the larger rulers in the area and began to take on other representative posts in the administration. With Count Friedrich Magnus , the tradition of pursuing a military career began.

Life

Count Wolfgang Georg was born on December 20, 1694 in Castell, Lower Franconia. He was the first-born son of Count Wolfgang Dietrich and his second wife Dorothea Renate, born von Zinzendorf and Pottendorf . Wolfgang Georg had seven siblings and six half-siblings from his father's first marriage. However, several of his siblings did not reach adulthood.

The young count first studied in the Netherlands. Here he attended the universities in Leyden and Utrecht , and then toured France and the Holy Roman Empire on the obligatory cavalier tour . After the death of his father in 1709, Wolfgang Georg, as Wolfgang Georg II., Together with his four brothers and half-brothers, took control of the county, which was divided into four parts of the country for this purpose.

In 1714, the count followed in the footsteps of his uncle Friedrich Magnus and took a position as captain in the margravial Ansbach army. In the course of this military career, Wolfgang Georg was involved in the campaigns against the Turks in Hungary and Italy. In 1718 he was shipwrecked off Genoa and narrowly escaped death. A year later the count was critically injured while storming a fort near Messina .

From 1721 Wolfgang Georg participated in the war of the Quadruple Alliance against Spain. Here he served in the "Graf Seikendorf" regiment, was wounded twice and, still suffering from a leg injury, took leave of the military in 1727. In the meantime he had risen to lieutenant colonel of the Franconian district . Count Wolfgang Georg lived in Castell until the end of his life and died here on September 22, 1735.

Marriage and offspring

Count Wolfgang Georg married Countess Friederike zu Ortenburg around 1727 . He had a total of eight children with her, but only four of them reached adulthood. The first-born son Christian Friedrich Carl was made heir to the throne and took over the part of the country after the death of his father.
