The Protestant church is a listed church building in Albungen , a district of Eschwege in the Werra-Meißner district ( Hesse ).

The construction

The small late Romanesque hall building was probably built around the year 1075, as the brickwork with two walled-up arched windows suggests. As can be deduced from the year 1621 HK on the northern gallery, the church was expanded in the 17th century. It was renovated in 1890 and 1912. It is provided with a baroque roof turret. The galleries date from 1621 and 1695. The parapets are painted and show a. A. the coat of arms of the Diede family . An early Romanesque bronze bell is remarkable.

In August 2016 the Albunger Church was officially declared a cycle path church . During the day from Good Friday to Reformation Day, it is also accessible to visitors outside of church service times. It is the 6th church for cyclists on the Werra Valley cycle path .

Tombstones

Epitaph of a Diede on the church

Two tombstones are attached to the western outer wall, memories of the Diede and Diede zum Fürstenstein families who owned Fürstenstein Castle above Albungen from 1436 until it died out in December 1807. The right epitaph is a grave slab donated by the Diedes for their long-time administrator Elias Thon. The left epitaph shows a larger than life figure carved in stone, representing a diede, in the knight's costume of his time with a Spanish collar and a mustache. His coat of arms can be seen at his feet.

Church window

The Albunger church window

Nothing is known about the history of the window. Documents on origin and installation are missing. It is believed that the three-part window ensemble was used during the extensive renovation in 1890. It was probably created in the second half of the 19th century during the neoclassical phase of glass painting and shows a mixture of figurative and ornamental images. The figurative motifs are the biblical symbols: vine with the branches , ears of wheat and the victorious lamb on the book with the seven seals .
