The Evangelical Church Alt-Lietzow (also: Lietzow-Kirche, Dorfkirche Lietzow (16th century); in the 18th to 20th centuries also: Lützow-Kirche ) is a Protestant church in the former village of Lietzow , now part of Berlin-Charlottenburg . It is the fifth church at this point, the previous buildings of which were demolished after partial damage. Today's church complex, built according to plans by the architect Ludolf von Walthausen , was inaugurated in 1961. He belongs to the church district Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf of the Evangelical Church Berlin-Brandenburg-Silesian Upper Lusatia .

Building history

The first building was first mentioned in 1541 in a directory of church taxes as "Lutzenn is a branch belongs against Wilmerstorff". It already existed, probably burned down towards the end of the Thirty Years War .

A new building was on September 28, 1655 inaugurated . After the city of Charlottenburg was founded in 1705, the church was assigned to the Charlottenburger Sprengel in 1708 . Since then the pastor of the Luisenkirche has also been pastor of the Lietzow village community. Despite construction work in 1803 and 1821, an extensive reconstruction had to be carried out in the 1840s.

According to a design by Friedrich August Stüler from 1845, the church was completely rebuilt from 1848 to 1850 under the royal building inspector Julius Manger . It received two bell towers, a vestibule and a choir extension in neo-Gothic shapes. The interior of the church, however, remained almost unchanged. As early as 1863 and 1864, further extensions were necessary on the north and south sides.

After 1900, more space was needed in the churches for the enormously increasing population of Charlottenburg. According to a competition design by the architect Jürgen Kröger , a neo-baroque new building with 900 seats and a single bell tower was built between 1910 and 1911 after the old church was razed. On November 22, 1943, this building was destroyed by several aerial bombs in an air raid during World War II .

Today's smaller successor building consists of a composition of several components: the main building in the form of a tent, the small bell tower and the parish hall, as well as the covered walkway (connecting the buildings). The complex was built between 1960 and 1961 under the architect Ludolf von Walthausen and inaugurated on October 8, 1961. The main building - typologically almost a roof-top house - offers 300 seats, the parallel cubic parish hall has a hall with 185 seats. Both buildings are connected to one another by the covered corridor. There is a free-standing bell tower next to the corridor .

Furnishing

In addition to the modern ambo and altar with a simple cross, the church has an organ by Eberhard Friedrich Walcker on the east gallery. The historical, around one meter high baptismal font from 1599, which is placed in front of the altar, is remarkable . It consists of Saxon sandstone and contains the following inscriptions :

MARCI ON THE LAST ONE WHO IS BELIEVED AND BAPTIZED WILL BECOME SHELICH BUT WHO DO NOT BELIEVE WILL BE DAMNED

GIDEON FREISE DER CHVRF: HOFGLASER HAS TO HONOR THIS CHURCH'S BAPTISM AND TO WOLGE THE COMMUNITY: ANNO 1.5.9.9

The font was removed during the renovation in 1863. Before 2006, the art historian Sophia Hofmann discovered him in the Märkisches Museum Berlin . The baptismal font was restored by the Jan Hamann company and, after mediation by the Heimatmuseum Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf, made available to the Alt-Lietzow church as a permanent loan. During the service on October 1, 2006, the font was used again.
