The Evangelical Church Altenburschla , today also Johanneskirche, is a listed church building in Altenburschla , a district of Wanfried in the Werra-Meißner district ( Hesse ).

History and architecture

When the foundation stone for the church was laid is unclear, but a permanent church building existed before the introduction of the Reformation in the Landgraviate of Hesse in 1526 and perhaps as early as 1362. The report in the Fulda annual reports from 1008 of the fire of a St. James church “Burschla “May already refer to a previous building of the church in Altenburschla. The year 1564 on a corner stone in the choir tower names the year in which the tower was added to the existing nave.

The substructure of the 19.70 m long (including tower) and 8.70 m wide (at the tower only 7.30 m) church is made of sandstone and a few limestone stones. The superstructure is made of timber . The ship is 11.50 m high, the tower 16.30 m. The masonry is approx. 90 cm thick, a little thinner in the tower.

The church was badly damaged in the Thirty Years' War in 1637 , and it was not until 1752–1774 that it was seriously renovated; the year 1762 carved in stone above the gates comes from the renovation of the building. The superstructure was designed as a half-timbered structure, and the tower also received the two half-timbered storeys. The third, slated floor of the tower with the lantern cover dates from 1825.

The organ in the choir gallery was donated by Johann Heinrich and Catharina Hose in 1763 and is probably the work of the organ builder Johann Wilhelm Schmerbach the Elder from Frieda near Eschwege . The gallery paintings that were discovered during renovation work in 1969 are considered a rarity. The church has three bells. The movement , which was repaired a few years ago, is still in the original, but is supported by an electronic winding of the weights and a radio clock for time correction.
